Troy-Bilt®/KAB Taking RootTM Grant (application closes March 25, 2013)

Troy-Bilt® and Keep America Beautiful are proud to introduce Taking RootTM, a gardening grant program for KAB affiliates. Taking Root will award six affiliates a total of $25,000 in grants and $7,000 in Troy-Bilt products – with $10,000 cash plus up to $2,000 in products presented to the grand prize winner, and $3,000 cash plus up to $1,000 in products to each of the five runners-up. Any KAB-certified affiliate in good standing in the U.S. and Puerto Rico may apply for funding for a common use gardening project, such as starting a community garden, implementing a gardening education program or creating a flower garden.

Taking Root will award:

  • $10,000 cash plus up to $2,000 in Troy-Bilt products to one (1) organization
  • $3,000 cash plus up to $1,000 in Troy-Bilt products to each of the five (5) runners-up

Key dates:

  • Application process will close at 11:59 p.m. EST on March 25, 2013
  • Six finalists will be selected by Troy-Bilt and KAB and notified on March 29 (embargoed until April 22)
  • Finalists will be announced and public voting for the winner will begin on April 22 via Troy-Bilt’s Facebook page (facebook.com/troybilt)
  • Voting will close at 11:59 p.m. EST on May 12, 2013

Eligibility:

  • Any KAB-certified affiliate in good standing in the U.S. and Puerto Rico is invited to apply
    • Applications considered must be for a common use gardening project – such as starting a community garden, implementing a gardening education program or creating a public flower garden
    • Project proposed must be approved and ready to start in earnest during 2013

If chosen as a finalist, affiliates must agree to:

  • Promote their participation using their own communications channels (e.g., newsletters, website, social media) and local media
  • Provide a one- to two-minute video for the contest tab on Troy-Bilt’s Facebook page, with flipcam provided by Troy-Bilt (an FTP site will be provided to upload videos)
  • Provide content for Troy-Bilt following receipt of the grant, showcasing how the funds and products are being used, including: 
    • Picture with Troy-Bilt check and product and/or “before” picture; 
    • Monthly work-in-progress photos and updates – such as first planting, product being used, etc.;
    • Completed project

Project Description 

Provide a detailed project proposal (no more than two pages, double-spaced in a Word document), including the following list of information. The requested information below is listed in order of importance in determining the six finalists. When you complete the project description, please follow the upload instructions below.

  1. Background and statement of need, including a description of the expected impact the project will have on the community
  2. Expected results and sustainability of the project
  3. Program description
  4. Proposed media and social media outreach
  5. Budget and impact of the grant on the overall project, including if the grant would fund a part of a larger project (i.e. the grant would allow us to create 5 of our 10 proposed community gardens with the remaining funds coming from private donors)
  6. A breakdown of how a $10,000 or $3,000 grant would be used
  7. A list of what Troy-Bilt products may be needed to complete the project

Also, please include a visual representation of what the project’s end result will look like (photo, illustration, etc.). Any other supplemental materials may also be included, no more than two pages.
