Keep America Beautiful

Volunteer Spotlight

Dana Rockwell
Keep Northeastern Pennsylvania Beautiful

Disgusted by the amount of trash he would encounter on his fishing trips to the local stream, Dana Rockwell started organizing community cleanups in 2012 to pick up litter along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Since their first cleanup, Dana and his active following of volunteers have extended their efforts to the roadways and rail trails all around Susquehanna County and have collected over 18 tons of trash, 3,000 tires and recycled over 2 tons of various metals over the last three years.

To ensure the continuation and maintenance of these cleanups, Dana set up a Facebook group so fellow Susquehanna residents can update each other on instances of illegal dumping in the area, coordinate hikes and bike rides, and plan the next cleanup.

Dana also takes a very proactive role in his community to engage local youth—from family members to scout troops, church youth groups and students—in every cleanup so that they learn the importance of being “responsible stewards of the land.”

Thank you, Dana, for your leadership and the inspiration you provide not only to the residents of Susquehanna, but to people all over the country!
