Volunteer Spotlight

Sharon Gray
Keep Tallahassee-Leon County Beautiful, Inc.
Tallahassee, Florida

Sharon Gray lives near the Apalachicola National Forest and for the past eight years she has helped organize a cleanups in a local forest where materials are illegally dumped. Nearly 100 volunteers rally to clean up this area each year. The volunteers are locals who use the forest recreationally, as well as neighbors and high school students.

Construction materials, tires, furniture and other illegally dumped items are collected, sorted, recycled and disposed of properly. In 2014, nearly 20 tons of materials were collected and sorted. Marpan Recycling and the Leon County Solid Waste Department provide roll offs and waive fees to make this possible. Following the cleanup, Sharon also serves lunch for the volunteers as a thank you (made possible through a grant from Publix).

Sharon is a tiny lady who has a big passion for this project and is a force for change in the community.
