Volunteer Spotlight

Mason Carratt
Green Youngstown - Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling

Mason has been a dynamo in starting and growing community gardens in his neighborhood. Mason started with one vacant lot and planted a small vegetable garden, and he gave away all the produce to the elderly residents in a low income retirement home down the street. Just three years later, he now has expanded the garden to capacity and started a fruit orchard in 3 vacant lots across the street. He is constantly drumming up volunteers, organizations, sponsors to help beautify his neighborhood and expand the gardens reach in the community.

Besides the planting and maintenance of the garden and orchards, he regularly leads community cleanups in the very blighted area in which he lives, In addition, he collects donations of clothing and other necessities to combine with the produce grown in the garden to give to the homeless living in downtown Youngstown. You can also see him pitching in on other community group cleanups and activities regularly across the Mahoning Valley. Hundreds, if not thousands of volunteers have worked in his gardens, and have inspired others to give back in their neighborhoods. He is always helping, always growing, always involved.

Keep America Beautiful has a strong national network of affiliates and partners that work with millions of volunteers who take action in their communities.
