Trek Against Trash logo

The Trek Against Trash began as a dream in March 2008 when avid hikers and environmentalists Jordan Price and Carlie Roberts set out on a monumental mission -- to hike the 2,174 mile Appalachian Trail and raise awareness for greener lifestyles in partnership with national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful. Jordan completed the Trek in August of 2008. In five months on the trail, Jordan and Carlie visited with Keep America Beautiful affiliates, and joined in efforts to clean up public lands, reduce, reuse, recycle, and educate.

In the spirit of this incredible journey, Keep America Beautiful is proud to continue Jordan and Carlie's mission with the continuation of Trek Against Trash. It's a great activity for an individual, family or friends to take on during Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, which takes place March through May.

You can hold your own Trek -- in your own community -- and don't worry. You don't have to hike for thousands of miles!

In fact, the main "message" of the Trek Against Trash is that practicing sustainability and personal responsibility for the enviroment is best accomplished by lots of small steps. Steps like recycling, cleaning up a local park, or just raising awareness for some of our nation's most valuable resources -- our treasured parks and public lands. When taken together, these small steps add up to big changes and big benefits for the planet.

Here's what you can do:

  • STEP 1: Identify a local park, trail or open space that would be good place for a Trek. Use these simple guidelines.

  • STEP 2: Register to host your own local Trek Against Trash. Once you've registered, you can easily create your own "Treksite" to recruit participants, raise funds, and spread the word.

  • STEP 3: Determine your mission. Will you clean up trash? Hold a recycling hike? Raise awareness for local parks? Let your creativity be your guide (here are a few ideas to get you started).

  • STEP 4: Use these customizable tools and resources to help raise awareness of your event and raise funds for Keep America Beautiful's efforts

  • STEP 5: Tell us what you did! Send us a quick report, and we'd love to see your photos!

It's that easy! What's more, it's a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, get some exercise and make new friends.

So... how will you help Keep America Beautiful? Lace up those boots, grab some gorp and a bottle of water, and hit the trails!
