Keep America Beautiful

The Great American Cleanup is an excellent platform to teach individual responsibility and caring for one’s community through experiential education. Through a wide array of workshops, special events and on-the-ground service projects, leaders from our network of affiliates and participating organizations are changing attitudes and behaviors by engaging people where they live in important livability issues such as litter prevention, recycling and community greening.

Keep Houston Beautiful, TX
Keep Houston Beautiful transformed Lantrip Elementary School’s campus by engaging a parent support group and students to bring nature into this urban area. They created mulch trails and pathways now used daily by students who run along the one-quarter mile trail. There are now 12 raised garden beds symmetrically placed in a grid that sit on top of a decomposed granite pad that also serves as a new outdoor classroom. The school’s goal is to line the pathways with interactive learning stations where the children can explore various aspects of environmental science and connect to the outdoors.

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, FL
The Florida Learning Garden, a project of Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful (KTBB) in partnership with the Florida State Fairgrounds, is a permanent one-acre interactive educational experience. From ‘right-plant, right-place’ to best practices for water conservation, the Florida Learning Garden educates residents on multiple growing techniques and sustainable practices to utilize in their own homes and gardens. Local Lowe’s Heroes volunteers helped construct a gazebo and install a butterfly garden on the property. KTBB also partnered with the Home Builder’s Institute (HBI), an organization that teaches construction skills to at-risk or previously incarcerated individuals. HBI volunteers built workbenches to provide a space for youth educational programs.
