2008 GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP
Thanks to Millions of Keep America Beautiful Volunteers Across the Nation
After three months and more than 30,000 events in 17,000 communities across the country, Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup drew to a close at the end of May.
Thanks to our nearly 3 million volunteers from coast to coast for making the nation's largest community improvement program one of the most successful ever. The remarkable results of the program are presently being tallied and will be announced in September.
The scope of the three-month program is simply too large to manage without tremendous support from our list of National Sponors, which include American Honda Motor Co., Inc., The Dow Chemical Company, Firestone Complete Auto Care and Tires Plus, GLAD ForceFlex Trash Bags, Pepsi-Cola Company, Sam’s Club, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, Sprint Foundation, Troy-Bilt Lawn and Garden Equipment, Waste Management, Inc. and the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company. Educational Partners -- ReCellular, Inc. and Rubber Manufacturers Association. Thanks to ALL for helping to produce the most successful Great American Cleanup yet!

TREK AGAINST TRASH
Eco-Conscious Hikers Pass Halfway Point on the A.T.
Keep America Beautiful's "trekkers," Jordan Price and Carlie Roberts, recently passed the halfway point en route to completing the 2,174 miles of the Appalachian Trail in the name of KAB. The couple's goal for their "Trek Against Trash: The Hike to Keep America Beautiful" is to heighten awareness that everyone has the means to lessen their environmental impact, whether on or off the trail. While Jordan and Carlie still have about 1,000 miles to go, they continue to spread the good word about practicing "reduce, reuse, recycle" principles in our everyday lives.
You can trek right along with Jordan and Carlie by following their blog or their flickr photo stream. It's just like being on the trail ... minus the bugs and aching knees. Make sure to log on to follow the Trek's progress and make a donation. Just one cent per mile ($21.74) can make a meaningful difference, and will benefit KAB's local efforts to improve community environments.
> Listen to Jordan and Carlie's interview from the trail on WDUN - Gainesville, Ga. Thanks, Bill and Joel!
PROJECT PROFILE
Mobile, Ala., Police Cutouts aren't Messing Around When it Comes to Litter
Keep America Beautiful affiliate leader Bob Haskins of Keep Mobile Beautiful and the City of Mobile have come up with a very compelling way to help keep litterers literally looking over their shoulders. Haskins now has at his disposal six, life-size cardboard cutouts of police officers holding anti-litter messages on "patrol" throughout the city.
Haskins said on WKRG-News that the police cutouts are "going to be eye catching... It's very important that people understand that if they get caught littering, it's gonna cost them $406 or the judge could sentence them to go out and pick up litter."
Litter fines have been increased in Mobile to $200 plus court costs, making these anti-litter warning signs a welcome reminder to obey the law.
